When our dogs eat, bits of food along with bacteria collect along and around the gum line that leads to plaque forming. Over a few days, the plaque begins to harden and turns into tartar. Unless removed this then sticks to our dog’s teeth.

If tartar is allowed to build up it can soon begin to irritate the gums, causing them to become inflamed. This develops into the condition known as “gingivitis”. Often this rears its ugly head as our dog’s start to suffer from bad breath.

You may also begin to notice that your dog’s gums no longer have a healthy pink color to them but are becoming red.

It is vital that you make sure that you prevent tartar from building up. If you don’t remove it from your dog’s teeth it can soon build up under their gums. In turn, this will then cause their gums to start pulling away from their teeth and small pockets will start form. These pockets provide the perfect place for bacteria to get in.

Now here is where it gets scary….

Should the problem get to this stage, your dog has now developed periodontal disease, which cannot be reversed. This can lead to abscesses or infections forming. This, in turn, can cause teeth to come loose or bone loss.

Studies carried out have shown it can lead to even worse medical problems apart from those in their mouth, such as heart disease, liver disease or kidney failure.

There are many experts who believe that once gum tissue begins to break down it provides a suitable route for bacteria to then enter a dog’s bloodstream.

Sadly, if your pet’s immune system isn’t able to kill off the bacteria that is in their mouth, it is given the opportunity to then circulate through their blood. Increasing the chances of the bacteria being able to gain access to their heart and then infect it.

A dog’s bad breath isn’t only a sign that they may have gum disease; it could be a sign that something else is seriously wrong. Every dog owner should read this.

According to the American Animal Health Association, the main symptom that your dog is suffering from any sort of dental disease is bad breath. But here’s something that you and other dog lovers don’t know and which is really scary.

It is that gum disease is the number one illness that affects our dogs. Sounds a bit unbelievable, but it’s a scary reality.

“Unfortunately, other than bad breath, there are few signs of the disease process evident to the owner and professional dental cleaning. As a result, periodontal disease is usually under-treated, and may cause multiple problems in the oral cavity and may be associated with damage to internal organs in some patients as they age.”
